  • Overview

    Serve the financial needs of our business members by providing business loans, deposit accounts, and ancillary services.  Coordinates the development and delivery of all business services products.  Takes the leadership role in representing the credit union to the local small business market in order to build awareness, brand image, credibility and new business.  Assures the credit union’s on-going ability to be our members’ preferred source for business financial products by participating in the development of new and responsive products and services.  Oversees all personnel in the Business Banking Department.


    Business Development:


    • Works with the Business Services team to develop and implement a business plan/outreach strategy and identify/develop new member segments within the credit union’s footprint and expand lending and deposit opportunities.
    • Seeks opportunities to build new relationships and expanding existing relationships by offering flexible and competitive financial management solutions, including business loans, lines of credit, deposit and other business products.
    • Provides sales management leadership and expertise to business services team.  Monitors activities, progress toward goals and participates in member calling efforts.
    • Provides advice and counsel to members on financing related matters, representing both the interest of the credit union and benefit to our members.
    • Ensures presentations for each business loan includes cross-sales of the appropriate business and consumer banking products and services to develop a long-term relationship with Meritrust as the member’s primary financial service provider.
    • Manage production, pipelines, selling efforts and overall sales management.  Routinely engage in selling activities that will produce funded business loans and deposits as well as referrals to other areas of the credit union.
    • Prepare and submit monthly sales production and member call reports to Chief Business Officer.
    • Actively participate in community events/organizations, and serve as a representative to business-related groups and agencies.
    • Work directly with business owners and principle managers, assessing their financial needs, to determine the appropriate lending and/or deposit services to meet those needs.


    Portfolio Management:


    • Manage, develop and maintain all aspects of the business loan and deposit portfolio.
    • Working with business services team and underwriting partner, reviews loan requests and recommendations for loan pricing and terms.
    • Establish, monitor and hold business lending team accountable to timely monitoring of loan portfolios to meet established loan monitoring requirements.
    • Prepare well developed credit approval requests that conform to the required underwriting format and guidelines set forth I credit policy.  Work with lending team to ensure all complex issues of the credit request have been adequately addressed.
    • Monitor the loan portfolio, communicating directly with borrowers as appropriate; actively participate with business lending operations staff to ensure all requirement financial due dates are met and information received from members in a timely manner.
    • Maintain the credit quality of the business loan portfolio within credit union standards and guidelines; promptly surface any and all risk issues uncovered in the course of managing the portfolio.  Work with Credit Manager to assess emerging risks and develop resolution strategies.
    • Maintain accurate and current loan files, including annual requests for financial records from the member business, insurance, and other pertinent documentation as required by internal policy and NCUA regulations
    • Assist Special Accounts, when necessary, to help resolve loan delinquencies or negative business deposit accounts. 


    Department Leadership


    • Collaborate with Chief Business Officer in establishing annual budgets as well as development of growth and profitability goals for the department.  Set the strategic vision/direction for the business lending/deposit functions.
    • Advise management of changes in the market as they occur.  Seeks out and recommends additional business opportunities within the areas of new programs, new products, new vendor relationships, etc.
    • Drive the development and implementation of new products and services while analyzing the impact to the loan and deposit portfolio to determine the impact on growth and financial results.
    • Identify and actively develop/oversee implementation of process solutions to enhance member service.  Thoroughly understand and leverage technology in delivery of service to business members.
    • Conduct presentations to the Board of Directors, volunteer committees, and Leadership Team. 


    Business Services Team Management:


    • Successfully hire, develop, motivate and manage staff performance to meet department’s strategic objectives and growth goals.
    • Provide day to day oversight of business services team, including monitoring loan production, deposit generation, fee income generation and cross sales in accordance with annually established goals.
    • Provide guidance to team members as needed in developing the professional skills needed to manage the expected growth of the business loan/deposit portfolios.
    • Work to build a collaborative team within the business loan/deposit teams to enhance vision of shared goals and create spirit of support and cooperation to meet the goals together.




    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related curriculum, or the equivalent.
    • Seven to ten years of demonstrated and successful experience in a financial service institution leading a business lending team, including five or more years of successful experience in business development.
    • Demonstrated and strong relationship management and sales skills with the ability to solicit and retain business banking relationships.
    • Strong commercial credit structure and analytical skills to ensure complex credits are structure and priced appropriately to borrower risk.
    • Thorough knowledge of loan structuring and documentation across various business and collateral structures.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of business development techniques, sales development and planning and the ability to assess risk levels of credit relationships in relation to economic, financial and environmental factors.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of lending, deposit products and services, operational functions and related policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and effective monitoring of the loan portfolio.
    • Ability to be collaborative, working in a willing and cooperative manner to achieve success.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and service skills.
